The Inter-American Human Rights System’s two institutions, the Inter-American Court and Inter-American Commission, have increasingly influenced the development of international human rights law. Nevertheless, many are still unfamiliar with the System’s significant accomplishments. This presentation will review and critique key developments in the Inter-American case law, considering whether recent trends fully contemplate the values and priorities of victims and potential victims of human rights abuse.
Thomas Antkowiak is an Associate Professor of Law and Director of the International Human Rights Clinic at Seattle University School of Law, United States. Prof. Antkowiak has published widely on the Inter-American Human Rights System, reparations for rights violations and indigenous rights, and has handled numerous cases before international human rights tribunals. Antkowiak’s most recent work, The American Convention on Human Rights : Essential Rights (with Alejandra Gonza) was published by Oxford Univ. Press in May.
